My Signal Vault exists for the gap between knowing something important and being able to pass it on. It closes that gap automatically, and only when it has to.
Why it exists
Most people have something that would be difficult to reconstruct without them. Where the will actually is. The password to the account that pays the mortgage. The name of the person who should be called first. The documents that back up a story someone spent two years reporting.
The usual answers are poor. A sealed envelope in a drawer is found too late or not at all. A password manager shared in advance means giving away access today for something that might be needed in ten years. Telling a lawyer works, until the thing you need to pass on changes and the lawyer has last year's copy.
A deadman switch solves it differently. Nothing is given away in advance. The information sits encrypted, you keep it current, and it is only released if you stop responding.
How it works
You create a vault, write the message, and attach any files that should go with it. You name one recipient and choose how often you will check in, anywhere from one hour to thirty days.
Once the vault is armed it counts down. A reminder reaches you at 75 percent of the interval and again at 90. Checking in is one tap and resets the clock. If the deadline passes without a check in, the message and the files are emailed to the recipient and the vault is marked as delivered. It does not send twice.
Files are encrypted with AES-256-GCM before they are written to storage. Each file gets its own key, which is itself encrypted with the account master key. A copy of the storage bucket without that key is meaningless.

Lawyers and executors. Instructions that have to reach a specific person, kept current without a new appointment every time something changes.
Executives and founders. Access to systems that only one person holds, handed to a named deputy if that person is unreachable.
Journalists. Material and context that should reach an editor if the reporter goes quiet, with a timer short enough to matter.

Nothing is sent early. A paused vault sends nothing. An armed vault sends only after its deadline passes with no check in. There is no other path.
