Change the email address on your account
How the two step email change works, why your old address keeps working until you confirm, and what it affects.
The steps
- Go to Profile.
- Enter the new address and save.
- A confirmation link is sent to the new address.
- Open that link. The change happens at that moment and not before.
Why it works that way
Because an unconfirmed change is how accounts get stolen. If the address could be changed instantly, anyone with a borrowed session could point your account at their own inbox, request a password reset and own it. Requiring the new address to prove itself makes that impossible.
It also protects you from a typo. If you mistype the new address the link goes nowhere, nothing changes, and your account carries on with the address it had.
Until you confirm
Your existing address remains the account address in every respect. Sign in, reminders, delivery notices and password resets all keep using it. The pending change sits there harmlessly; request it again if the link expires.
What it changes
- Where you sign in from — the new address becomes your username.
- Where check in reminders go.
- Where the notice goes when a vault delivers.
- Where password reset links go.
What it does not change
Your vault recipients. Those are set on each vault individually and are unrelated to your own address. Changing where you receive reminders does not change where a vault delivers.
It is logged
Both the request and the completed change are written to your audit log. If either appears there and you did not do it, change your password immediately and turn on two factor authentication.
