What happens when your plan drops
Nothing is deleted when you move to a smaller plan, but armed vaults over the new limit are affected. Read this before letting a card expire.
Your files are safe
Nothing is deleted when a plan drops, however far over the new allowance you are. A Pro account with 6GB stored that falls back to Free keeps all 6GB, and every file stays downloadable.
What you cannot do is upload anything new until you are back under the new limit. Delete what you no longer need, or restore the plan, and uploading works again.
Your vaults are the part to think about
Free allows one armed vault, Basic allows five. If you are over that when the plan drops, the excess vaults cannot remain armed, and a vault that is not armed cannot deliver.
This is the consequence that matters. Somebody with four armed vaults whose card expires unnoticed is left with one, and the other three are no longer protecting anything. Nothing is destroyed and nothing is sent, but the protection you set up is not running.
Decide which vault matters most before a plan lapses, not afterwards. If you are cancelling deliberately, arm the one you want kept and pause the rest yourself, so the choice is yours.
Pro features stop
Self destruct timers already set continue to run and will still fire; you simply cannot set new ones. Custom check in intervals already in use keep working on existing vaults; new vaults are limited to the presets.
Warnings
A failed renewal is retried by Stripe over several days, with an email each time, and your plan stays active throughout. You are notified when the subscription actually ends. The most common cause of a surprise downgrade is an expired card on an address you no longer read, so it is worth checking the address on your Profile every so often.
Getting it back
Resubscribe. The allowance returns immediately and any vault you had to pause can be armed again straight away.
